20ft Reefer Container – Refrigerated Shipping and Storage
Here's what this container is, so you know what you're looking at. It's a 20-foot steel container with a built-in cooling machine and thick insulation. Reefer is short for refrigerated, and the machine usually sits at one end. Outside, it measures roughly 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8.5 feet tall. The insulation and machine take up space, so the inside is closer to 17 feet long.
What people use it for
Food businesses use them most, for produce, dairy, meat, fish, and drinks. Farms and growers hold harvests in them until market day. Caterers and event firms keep stock chilled between shows. Pharmacies and labs can use them too, but that needs extra checks and records. Some firms ship goods overseas in them, since ships supply power on board.
The good points
A reefer holds a set temperature, which an insulated box simply can't do. Most units can be set anywhere from deep frozen to gently chilled. Smooth, washable walls and a floor with air channels help cold air reach all the stock. Compared with building a cold room, it costs far less. It also moves by truck, so you can take it with you.
The honest bits
A reefer is only as good as its cooling machine, so ask plenty of questions. Ask for a recent test showing it reaches and holds the temperature you need. Ask how old the machine is and when it was last serviced.
Power is the big one. Most units need three-phase power, often 380 to 460 volts, so check your site first. Single-phase sites may need a generator or a converter. Running costs add up too, because the machine uses a lot of electricity.
An empty unit weighs about 6,000 pounds or more, so it needs a firm, level base. Delivery needs a tilt-bed truck or crane, plus room to maneuver. Check local rules, since some areas ask for a permit. Look over the floor, door seals, and walls for dents, damp, or damage. Old produce or chemicals can leave smells in the lining that are hard to remove. Ask whether it's new, one-trip, or used, because that changes price and condition.
If you run a business
If you supply food firms, farms, or caterers, chilled space is in steady demand. Buying through a wholesale distributor usually brings your cost per unit down. You also get straight answers about age, test results, and condition. Freight is the biggest cost with containers, so ask about it before ordering. Buyers ask about power early, so having those answers ready helps you sell.
That's all we do really: tell you what we have, ship it, and let you decide.
